Prayer Call: God...What Are You Doing? - I Got Questions
Good Morning BFB
Let’s start this Monday with some honesty: God… what are You doing? This is one of the realest questions we don’t always say out loud, but we feel it.
Because there are moments in life when what you see doesn’t match what you believe. You’re praying, and nothing changes. You trust God, but things around you seem to be falling apart. You’re walking with God, but this road seems to have blind curves, detours, and potholes bigger than the ones you find on Eglin Pkwy.
And it’s right there… in that tension of life where Romans 8:28 speaks to us:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (KJV).
Don’t rush to shout! Don’t be so quick to get spiritually deep. It’s easy to quote, “all things work together for good,” when all things are going well. But what about when life does what life does, and you just want to tell God to stop this train because you want to get off?
Let’s be clear! This verse is not a quick fix for your frustration. It’s not a spiritual cliché to silence your questions. It’s a theological anchor for when your life feels like it’s drifting.
To be clear, Paul writes Romans 8:28 to people who are struggling. In fact, the entire chapter is filled with tension: suffering, groaning, and waiting. This is not a “feel-good” moment. Paul is writing to people who don’t have it all together, and I would argue they have some questions. They may even be asking that silent question we don’t want anyone to know we are thinking: “God… what are You doing?” If you’ve ever asked that question, here’s an attempt at the answer!
1. God Is Working—Even When You Can’t See It—"And we know..."
Paul says, “And we know…”—not because we can see the outcome, but because we trust the Author. That’s the shift. That’s the hope. I argue that faith is not about having all the answers. True faith is about trusting God when you don’t.
Because if we’re honest, there are seasons where God’s work is not obvious. You don’t see progress. You don’t feel peace. You don’t have clarity. You feel angry. You are disappointed. You want to give up. And the temptation in those moments is to assume that if you can’t see God working, then God must not be working.
But that’s not how God operates. Just because it’s not visible doesn’t mean God is not active. In fact, right before verse 28, Paul reminds us that the Holy Spirit (our superpower) is interceding for us “in accordance with the will of God.” That means while you’re trying to figure it out, the Holy Spirit inside of us is working with heaven to work things out.
So even in your confusion, God is not silent. Even in your uncertainty, God is not still. He is working… even when you don’t see it.
2. God’s “Good” Is Not Just Favor, It is About Formation—"...for the good"
Here’s where we often get it wrong. We look at this verse and see the word “good,” and we define it incorrectly. We define “good” based on what feels good, or the favor of God, or what we can get from God—or, heaven forbid, what good things God owes us.
We think “good” means things go our way. Doors open. Problems resolve. Pain disappears. But Paul has something deeper in mind. The “good” in Romans 8:28 is not about comfort, it’s about Christlikeness.
God is not just trying to make your life better. God is making you better in Him. Let me say it again: God is not just trying to make your life better. God is making you better in Him. Third time for those in the back: God is not just trying to make your life better. God is making you better in Him.
God’s “good” is found in the process of Him shaping your character, strengthening your faith, and forming you into the image of Jesus. And that means some of what you’re experiencing isn’t punishment. It’s His process to make you more like Christ.
So instead of asking, “God, why is this happening to me?” ask: “God, what are You producing in me through this?”
3. God’s Plan Is Bigger Than This Moment - "...called according to His purpose."
When life doesn’t make sense, it’s easy to get stuck in the moment, to think this current season is the whole story. But Paul lifts our perspective. This promise is for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. That means your life is not random. God is not random. God is intentional. God is not just managing moments. He is fulfilling a purpose.
And that purpose doesn’t end with the situation you are in right now. No, it leads to your transformation and ultimately your glory with Christ. So no matter what this week looks like, hear this clearly: This is not the end of your story.
God is working beyond what you can see… shaping more than you can feel… and preparing more than you can imagine. God is conforming you into the image of Jesus. That’s the end goal. And what you’re experiencing right now is part of that process.
Here’s the tension you have to live with: You can ask, “God… what are You doing?” and He doesn’t owe you an answer. In fact, you may not get any of your questions answered, but “we know” we can still trust the One who holds the answers.
Life will be life. Life will have its ebbs and flows… mountains and valleys. It will bring you to your knees with questions. Don’t ignore it. Don’t suppress it. Keep bringing them to God.
Because faith is not the absence of questions. It’s the decision to trust God in the middle of them. So go ahead and ask: “God, what are You doing?” The good news of Romans 8:28 is you may not get every answer… but you can trust that God is working it all together!
When you can’t understand His hand, you can trust His heart.
Have a great day on purpose!
