Prayer Call: Point Them to Jesus

Good Morning, BFB!

This is a day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Today’s scripture focus: "They said to the woman “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” -John 4:42 NIV

John has told the story of a Samaritan woman who had a life-changing encounter with Jesus at a well. Jesus met her in an environment that was familiar and safe to her, but also a place where He could deal with her insecurities, questions, and sin. Once He has taken care of the necessities, He declares to her that He is the Messiah. She then leaves the well and returns to the city and tells the people about a man who told her all about herself. As I’ve been studying one question stood out in my mind – why was the message delivered by this woman so powerful? She pointed them to Jesus. I think we can learn a few things from her story about pointing them to Jesus.

The first thing her story shows us is – “You send, Jesus Saves”. When the woman returned to the city, she immediately pointed the people to Jesus. She told them to come and see a man. She didn’t tell them sit down and let me tell you about a man. She sent them to the one who could do the same for them. She didn’t try to do it herself. I argue that we get in the way of our own witness by trying to do the saving instead of sending them to the one who saves. We share our testimonies as a tool to point others to Jesus not to ourselves.

Secondly, her story shows us that “It’s Not About You, but Him. The individuals that she sent to Jesus told her that they no longer believed just because of what she said. Her message was never about her – it pointed to Jesus. She told them what He did for her. She knew that they needed to know what Jesus could do. She didn’t get bogged down in every detail; she summed it up by saying He told her everything. When we share our testimonies, we should be direct about what Jesus did. The most important part of a testimony is Jesus. Not how you got into the situation but how He got you out of the situation. Not how far away you wandered, but how far He went to save you.

Third, her story shows us that we should “Let Them Hear Him, Not You”. The other Samaritans no longer believed just because of what she said but they now believed because they heard Jesus for themselves. The woman knew the importance of them hearing Jesus because she heard Jesus. While at the well she was given the opportunity to hear not just the voice of Jesus but the heart of Jesus without the noise of the crowd. We too must allow Jesus to be heard. We can’t get so caught up in hearing ourselves that we forget the power of Jesus’s voice. Remember how clear His voice was when He called you, we don’t want to drown that out for someone else. When we allow room for those around us to hear His voice, it is only then when they can know for themselves that Jesus is the Savior of the world.

As we go through this week, I pray that we reflect on the power of the woman’s message. Remember that we send, but Jesus saves. It’s not about us, always about Him. Let His voice be the loudest in the room. Let everything we say and do point them to Jesus.
