Prayer Call: The Power of a Selah Moment

Good Morning, BFB!

This is a day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Today’s scripture focus: “For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah” -‭‭Psalms‬ ‭62‬:‭5‬-‭8‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Selah is a small word that's very powerful. It's word that many suggest it was used to remind us that we need to take a powerful pause to reflect and realign our hearts with God. Most agree that selah is an invitation for us to stop, breath,  reflect and consider deeply what God is saying. Life often makes us feel like we need to keep rushing forward to the next thing and the next thing. Selah tells us that sometimes we need to slow down and savor the presence of God.

The power of a selah moment reminds us to pause. It's no secret that life moves quickly. We often find ourselves taking care of one task and moving to the next. We have one doctor's appointment and move to the next. We have one child's game and move to the next. As we move from one moment to the next, often times we don't truly absorb what God is doing in those moments around us. A powerful selah moment is God's invitation for us to pause in the middle of all the noise and to remember who He is. How do we do that? By building intentionality. Be intentional with your pauses throughout the day. Even if only a moment - intentionally stop to breathe, whisper a quick prayer, to read a verse, to reflect on where you've seen God's hand in your life. As you pause you make room for God's peace to find you, instead of finding His peace, you allow His peace to catch up to you and fill you.

The power of a selah moment causes us to reflect. Selah doesn't just mean to stop, it calls for us to think deeply. When we reflect and think deeply it allows the truth of who God is to move from our head only down to our heart. Instead of rushing past scripture, worship, or prayer, a selah moment invites us to sit with it, rest in it, and ask what is God trying to teach in this moment. How do we do that? Perhaps this morning you go back and read Psalms 62 in it's entirety, listen to a previous sermon you've heard - then don't move on to quickly past it. Jot down a verse or thought that stuck out to you and meditate on it. Let God's word sink in and shape your thoughts and actions.

The power of a selah moment invites us to rest. Rest is not a luxury - it's a spiritual necessity. A selah moment reminds us that true rest is not found in merely stopping your activities, but trusting God enough to lay your burdens down to Him. We are safest when we rest our hopes, our futures, and even our fears fully in Him. Think about when you can to take time to physically and spiritually rest. Step away from your phones, put them on silent or do not disturb. Let the to-do list stay be just that - to-do. You intentionally take the time to rest. To rest from the pressures, the anxieties, and the things that have held you. Now in the selah you rest but you don't stop completely. You take time to be spiritually restored and recharged for what God has in store. Use the selah moment to rest in God's presence. Don't try to fix everybody and fix every thing - but simply be with God and trust that He is in control.

The power of a selah moment teaches us the holy art of slowing down. When we pause we notice God's goodness. When we reflect we deepen our understanding of Him. When we worship, we lift His name even higher. And when we rest - when we truly trust His hands to carry what we cannot carry - we are having a selah moment.

I pray that at some point during this week you pause to take a selah moment. Your soul needs it more than you'll ever know.
